Have you ever delved into parenting books promising the key to being a "good" parent? You know the ones – brimming with instructions on what to do, how to be, and everything in between. Excitedly, you bring the book home, anticipating that this is THE solution, the game-changer. Yet, as time unfolds, you realize it didn't quite work, and now you might find yourself back at square one or, worse, with a strained relationship with your adolescent. ::sigh:: The inevitable question arises, "Why didn't it work? What did I do wrong?"
Let me share a perspective: most likely, those books didn't start from the roots, the foundation. Picture a tree without deep roots firmly grounded in the soil, it's vulnerable to being toppled by wind, snow, or rain. Like building a house, a solid foundation is essential. It requires stable ground; without it, the house crumbles. These fundamental concepts are the starting point for cultivating a strong relationship with our kids, and that's where I begin with the parents I work with.
Unfortunately, many parenting books offer quick and easy how-tos, suggestions, or fixes that often fall short in the long run. They might provide temporary relief, but, much like the tree succumbing to a storm, they lack the depth needed for enduring success. The importance of connection and community cannot be overstated, especially when it comes to parenting. When parents have a strong support system and a sense of community, they are better able to navigate the challenges of raising children and teenagers.

Having a community of like-minded parents can also provide a sense of belonging and connection. It can help parents feel less isolated and alone and can provide a safe space to share their struggles and triumphs.
